The Fortress is located on the right bank of the river Danube, at the confluence of the river Jezava and the Danube. The inner space occupies 11 ha and its wider surrounding meets urban structures. It was built after the model of the Fortress of Constantinople, as a defense fortification and represents one of the largest fortresses in Europe.

The fortification is divided into the Small and Big Town. Its base is in the form of a triangle.

It was built in the period between 1428. to 1439. Twenty years later, in 1459, the town falls under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The fall of Smederevo under the Turkish rule marked the end of the last Middle Age Serbian state.

During the reign of the Despot Djuradj Brankovic, the town of Smederevo had a particular political, cultural and economic importance.
